Aqunia Flood

Flood forecasting that decision-makers can actually act on.

Days-ahead flood depth and inundation maps — spanning entire river basins, countries, and even the continent, down to local-level resolution.

Leveraging cutting-edge hydrological simulation research, including outcomes from Today’s Earth — developed by JAXA and the University of Tokyo.

THE PROBLEM

Floods Are Getting Worse. And the Demand for Early Warning Is Growing.

Climate change is intensifying the global water cycle — driving more severe and unpredictable rainfall and flood events worldwide. As extreme weather becomes more damaging, governments, development agencies, and infrastructure operators face growing pressure to build effective Early Warning Systems. But deploying them at the scale and resolution needed remains a major challenge.

THE CHALLENGES

Most flood prediction systems are either too local or too coarse to act on.

Meeting this demand requires prediction systems that are both accurate and deployable at scale. Yet most existing approaches fall short.

Most flood prediction systems face an unavoidable tradeoff. Local models deliver precision — but require extensive site surveys, parameter tuning, and engineering effort that takes months to deploy and doesn't scale. Global models scale — but their resolution and accuracy fall short of what local decision-makers actually need to act.

Aqunia Floods is built to overcome that tradeoff.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

Three capabilities that set it apart.

01
Global Scale

Predict flood risk across entire countries and transboundary basins. Works even in regions with sparse or no ground observation networks, using satellite data and physics-based simulation.

Anywhere on Earth
02
Local Precision

Aqunia's localization technology connects global simulation to high-resolution inundation models — delivering flood depth and extent at local-level for the areas that matter most.

High-resolution
03
Days Ahead

Forecasts issued several days before a flood event — giving governments and operators the time needed to deploy resources, issue evacuation orders, and activate BCPs.

Not hours — days
GLOBAL COVERAGE

From global rivers to local inundation.

HOW IT WORKS

From weather to inundation map — end to end

1
High-Resolution Rainfall Forecasting

Starting from global weather models (ECMWF), we generate localized high-resolution rainfall data using AI.

2
Land Surface Modeling

Rainfall data processed with a land surface model to estimate runoff, soil moisture, and evapotranspiration.

3
Large-Scale River Simulation

Using Global River Hydrodynamic Model, we simulate river discharge and water level changes across large basins globally.

4
High-Resolution Flood Mapping

Detailed inundation models visualize flood depth and extent at meter-level resolution for critical areas.

Step 2–3 are powered by ILS (Integrated Land Simulator, comprised of MATSIRO & CaMa-Flood). We leverage research from Today's Earth, a global water cycle simulation system developed at JAXA and the University of Tokyo.
