Adapting to Climate Change for the Coexistence of Humanity and Water

THE CHALLENGE

Water is both humanity's greatest resource — and its greatest threat.

Floods

Every year, floods claim over 7,000 lives and displace tens of millions. For example, in the summer of 2024, record rainfall struck the Noto Peninsula — just months after a devastating earthquake. Rivers overflowed with little warning. This is not an exceptional year. This is the new normal.

Water Resources

2.2 billion people lack access to safe water. For example, in a country, nearly 80% of electricity comes from hydropower. When rainfall dropped below seasonal norms, the country faced sudden, prolonged blackouts. A single dry season cascaded into a national emergency.

WHY AQUNIA EXIST

Science in service of human decisions.

PURPOSE

Humanity and water, in balance.

Adapting to Climate Change For the Coexistence of Humanity and Water.

VISION

A world that avoids harm and harnesses water.

A world where people are safe from water's threats, and can benefit fully from its gifts. - Communities that anticipate floods, manage drought, and act with confidence.

MISSION

Predictions that move people to act.

To deliver prediction services — integrating AI, physical models, and observational data — that empower decision-makers around the world.

Scientific Integrity

A forecast that can't be explained can't drive action. We combine AI with physics-based hydrological models and real observational data — because trust is built on transparency, not accuracy alone.

Decision-Maker First

"A 1-in-100-year rainfall event" means nothing to a CFO deciding where to invest $100M. We design every product to translate complex science into clear, actionable insight for non-specialists.

Founder & CEO

Satoru Demoto

Satoru passed the Certified Meteorological Forecaster examination at 14 — the youngest person ever at the time. He went on to earn a Master of Science from the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute at the University of Tokyo, specializing in climate response mechanisms under global warming.

He then spent a decade at the intersection of strategy and technology — as a consultant at PwC and Arthur D. Little applying AI across industries, and as Chief Strategy Officer at Araya, an AI startup, leading AI projects and business development.

As co-founder of Gaia Vision, he was engaged in building flood forecasting solutions and deployed a climate risk analysis platform to major Japanese manufacturers. The company won the Minister of the Environment Award at the 2023 Environmental Startup Grand Prix, and secured a METI-adopted project covering Central Asia and Southeast Asia under the Global South master plan program.

In 2025, he founded Aqunia to bring cutting-edge global water cycle science into social implementation, combining the scientific depth of JAXA and University of Tokyo research with the product and business instincts of a practitioner
